Sweden World Cup 1958, Soviet Union debut at the tournament, following a qualification playoff against Poland. Seed in a Group 4 with Brazil, England and Austria, they collected three points in total, one from England and two from Austria. The Soviet Union eventually knocked England out in a play-off, in which Anatoli Ilyin scored in the 67th minute to knock England out. The Soviet Union were then eliminated by the hosts of the tournament, Sweden, in the quarter-finals.
